How can parents prevent digital damage to teens?

According to  Oklahoma State University Extension specialists, social media algorithms can subvert children’s normal social growth patterns and replace them with reinforced negativity about bullying, unrealistic body imagery and depression.

And, in news that alarmed parents and lawmakers, the Wall Street Journal revealed last week that researchers at Instagram had studied for years how its photo-sharing app affects young users and found that it can be particularly harmful to teenage girls.

Congress examined a variety of leaked Facebook documents in October 2021 that show the company and its executives knew for years that its Instagram app was making body image issues worse for teenagers--particularly for girls.

When a teen’s emotions take a dark turn, it might be more than just an age-appropriate bad mood or “phase” that they may be going through.

Over time, toxic social media exposure can build up and trigger: substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, anxiety attacks, and many other problems.

Then, when pandemic pressures are added — such as poor health, isolation, and uncertainty — social media’s influence becomes even tougher to manage.
