Various cancers caused by toxic groundwater at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base
Soldiers, workers, and families stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina from August 1953 through December 1987 that were exposed to toxic groundwater have reported the following cancerous diagnoses.
Liver cancer. Symptoms are uncommon in the early stages of liver cancer–later symptoms may include weight loss, belly pain, vomiting, and yellowed skin.
Esophageal cancer. A disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the esophagus–signs and symptoms of esophageal cancer are weight loss and painful or difficult swallowing.
Bladder cancer. This cancer typically affects older adults and is usually diagnosed early, when it's still treatable–but it's likely to recur, so follow-up tests are typically recommended.
The most common symptom is blood in the urine.
Breast cancer. Breast cancer can occur in women and rarely in men–symptoms include a lump in the breast, bloody discharge from the nipple, and changes in the shape or texture of the nipple or breast.
Multiple myeloma. A cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell–in multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells.
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. A type of cancer that begins in your lymphatic system–in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, white blood cells called lymphocytes grow abnormally and can form growths throughout the body.
Kidney cancer. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), also known as renal cell cancer or renal cell adenocarcinoma, is the most common type of kidney cancer–about 9 out of 10 kidney cancers are renal cell carcinomas.
Leukemia. Leukemia is a broad term for cancers of the blood cells–the type of leukemia depends on the type of blood cell that becomes cancer and whether it grows quickly or slowly.
