Various cancers caused by toxic groundwater at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base

Soldiers, workers, and families stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina from August 1953 through December 1987 that were exposed to toxic groundwater have reported the following cancerous diagnoses.

Liver cancer. Symptoms are uncommon in the early stages of liver cancer–later symptoms may include weight loss, belly pain, vomiting, and yellowed skin.

Esophageal cancer. A disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the esophagus–signs and symptoms of esophageal cancer are weight loss and painful or difficult swallowing.

Bladder cancer. This cancer typically affects older adults and is usually diagnosed early, when it's still treatable–but it's likely to recur, so follow-up tests are typically recommended.

The most common symptom is blood in the urine.

Breast cancer. Breast cancer can occur in women and rarely in men–symptoms include a lump in the breast, bloody discharge from the nipple, and changes in the shape or texture of the nipple or breast.

Multiple myeloma. A cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell–in multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. A type of cancer that begins in your lymphatic system–in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, white blood cells called lymphocytes grow abnormally and can form growths throughout the body.

Kidney cancer. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), also known as renal cell cancer or renal cell adenocarcinoma, is the most common type of kidney cancer–about 9 out of 10 kidney cancers are renal cell carcinomas.

Leukemia. Leukemia is a broad term for cancers of the blood cells–the type of leukemia depends on the type of blood cell that becomes cancer and whether it grows quickly or slowly.

Non-cancerous injuries caused by toxic groundwater at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base

The following list of non-cancerous injuries have also been reported by soldiers, workers, and families who were contaminated with toxic groundwater at Camp Lejeune.

Parkinson's disease. A brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination–symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time.

Renal toxicity. One of the most common kidney problems, occurring when the body is exposed to a toxin that causes damage to the kidneys–when kidney damage occurs, the body is unable to rid itself of excess urine, and wastes.

Scleroderma. Also known as systemic sclerosis, is a group of rare diseases that involve the hardening and tightening of the skin–it may also cause problems in the blood vessels, internal organs and digestive tract.

Cardiac birth defects. CHDs are present at birth and can affect the structure of a baby’s heart and the way it works–they can affect how blood flows through the heart and out to the rest of the body.

Hepatic steatosis (fatty liver disease). It usually causes no symptoms–when symptoms occur, they include fatigue, weight loss, and abdominal pain. Major risk factors include obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Aplastic anemia. Aplastic anemia is a form of bone marrow failure–in aplastic anemia, the bone marrow does not produce new cells, leaving the body susceptible to bleeding and infection.

Miscarriage. The most common type of pregnancy loss, miscarriages often occur because the fetus isn't developing normally–symptoms include fluid, blood, or tissue passing from the vagina and pain in the belly or lower back. It’s also common to feel sadness or grief.

The Shield Legal Network believes that soldiers, workers, and families of the toxic groundwater poisonings from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina should be allowed compensation and justice.
