What Firefighters and Soldiers Must Know About Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) and Kidney Cancer

AFFF (aqueous film forming foam), typically referred to as firefighting foam, contains perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances or “PFAS.”

PFAS are known to cause cancer–and it is believed there is a serious AFFF kidney cancer risk.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): “People exposed to high levels [of PFAS] may have increased risk of kidney cancer.”

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has also classified PFAS chemicals as possibly carcinogenic, affecting the kidneys specifically.

Firefighters and soldiers are at particularly high risk of developing kidney cancer potentially due to PFAS exposure from AFFF firefighting foam.

What’s more, airport personnel and property owners living near military bases and airports may also be at elevated AFFF kidney cancer risk.
