What Are Some of the Parkinson's Symptoms Victims Should Watch For?
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressing neurologic disorder that affects approximately 1 million people in the U.S. every year.
Parkinson’s results from the degeneration or dying off of certain cells–called dopaminergic neurons–which are located in the substantia nigra portion of the brain.
Parkinson’s is referred to as a movement disorder primarily because some of the most common symptoms are tremors, and the slowing and stiffening of movements in the joints.
However, Parkinson’s disease symptoms can be different in different people and can include speech problems, chronic constipation, fatigue, loss of coordination, loss of smell, and excessive sweating.
How does Paraquat cause Parkinson’s disease?
Paraquat disease kills cells through a mechanism called oxidative stress, meaning that altered cell chemistry leads to cell damage and death.
Not everyone who is exposed to Paraquat develops Parkinson’s disease, nor does everyone with a genetic susceptibility.
Only a small number of Parkinson’s disease cases are genetic or inherited. As with many diseases, there likely is an interaction between environmental exposures and genetics that leads to the disease.
Acute paraquat poisoning occurs through ingestion, inhalation or skin exposure. Most cases of poisoning occur because of accidental ingestion-poisoning is usually fatal and there is no antidote.
Long-term paraquat side effects include:
- Lung damage and scarring
- Kidney failure
- Heart failure
- Scarring of the esophagus
- Parkinson’s disease (from long-term exposure)
- Impaired lung function (from long-term exposure)
- Reproductive problems (from long-term exposure)
