The Connection Between Breast Cancer and Hair Relaxers and Hair Straighteners

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) published findings of the Sister Study, including data from over 33,000 women who were tracked for nearly 11 years.

Within that time frame, 378 women were diagnosed with uterine cancer, and those who used hair straighteners over four times in the previous year “were more than twice as likely to go on to develop uterine cancer compared to those who did not use the products.”

Around 60% of the women who reported using hair straightening products self-identified as Black, the press release states.

Other research studies showed similar alarming results.

According to The National Library of Medicine: “Hair relaxers and leave-in conditioners and oils, commonly used by Black/African American women, may contain estrogens or estrogen-disrupting compounds. Thus, their use may contribute to breast cancer risk.”

Also, researchers studied data from Boston University’s Black Women’s Health Study, which followed 59,000 self-identified African American women for over 25 years.

The research team found that frequent and long-term use of lye-based relaxers may increase the risk of breast cancer among Black women, compared with more moderate use.

The research team also found that “Black women who used hair products containing lye at least seven times a year for 15 or more years had an approximately 30% increased risk of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer compared with more infrequent users.”

Why It’s So Important That Black Women Suffering a Breast Cancer Diagnosis File a Claim

Using chemical hair straightening or relaxer products has been shown to more than double the risk of breast cancer in women.

All consumers that were diagnosed with breast cancer after using chemical hair straightening products may be eligible for compensation from a hair straightener lawsuit.

Consumers may be able to file a chemical hair straightener lawsuit if they:

-Used chemical hair straightening products or relaxers

-Were later diagnosed with breast cancer

Affected consumers can take a stand against the companies that made these products and seek compensation that can help pay for medical treatment.

Companies that manufacture personal care items bring in over $42 billion in revenue each year.

Without a doubt, these large corporations have the resources to conduct the necessary studies to ensure their products are safe.

And, when a company learns that its product contains a potentially harmful substance, the company has a duty to consumers to inform them.

Rather than pull the potentially dangerous products from shelves and conduct further research—or at least issue a warning to consumers—L’Oréal and other companies continued selling these products.

Product liability claims are one of the only ways consumers have to hold large corporations accountable for the harm their products cause.

The Shield Legal Network team believes that black women diagnosed with breast cancer after using hair relaxers and hair straightening products should receive justice and potential compensation.
