The Dangerous Hair Relaxer and Hair Straightener Products

A new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and funded by the National Institutes of Health suggested that frequent users of chemical hair-straightening products may be more likely to develop uterine cancer than those who didn't use those products.

For black women, the risk could be as high as 45% which the study suggests is likely due to different chemicals in hair products specifically for black women’s hair texture.

The study specifically noted that chemical hair straighteners usually contain products known as endocrine disrupters, which can affect hormone-sensitive cancers

The following manufacturers have been named in lawsuits alleging that the companies knew or should have known about their health risks while they kept the products on the market:

  • L’Oreal;
  • SoftSheen Carson;
  • Strength of Nature;
  • Dabur; and,
  • Namaste Laboratories.

In addition, the L’Oréal chemical hair straightener and relaxer products named in lawsuits include:

  • Dark & Lovely;
  • Motions;
  • Organic Root Stimulator; and,
  • Olive Oil Relaxer.

More Details on Dangerous Hair Relaxer and Hair Straightener Products

According to the study, chemical hair straighteners typically contain products that are known endocrine disrupters and can affect hormone-sensitive cancers.

The products include parabens, bisphenol A, metals, and formaldehyde, according to researchers in the NIH study.

Chemical relaxers can cause lesions and burns on the scalp, making it easier for them to then be absorbed into the body.

Toxic chemicals in beauty products are often buried in the catch-all ingredient “fragrance.”

The law does not require chemicals in fragrances to be identified separately.

This has allowed major manufacturers to sell products containing dangerous chemicals without disclosing the materials or the risks involved.

Unlike drug store brands, which are required by the Federal Fair Packaging and Labeling Act to list all product ingredients with the exemption of fragrance and colorants, professional salon brands are not.

The Shield Legal Network team believes that black women diagnosed with cancer after using hair relaxers and hair straightening products should receive justice and potential compensation.
