What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and How Does It Affect Newborns?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a group of conditions characterized by difficulty in social functioning, including repetitive behaviors or stereotyped interests.
The American Psychiatric Association merged four distinct autism diagnoses into one umbrella diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder–they included:
- autistic disorder
- childhood disintegrative disorder
- pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified, and
- Asperger syndrome.
Some individuals have an intellectual disability while others have average or above average intelligence–however, each individual presents with a unique profile of strengths and needs.
Approximately 1 in 54 children in the US have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Additionally, this condition is 4 times more common in males than it is seen in females.
Some people with ASD have severe symptoms that affect every aspect of their lives–others may have less severe symptoms. However, no matter where they are on the spectrum, it still affects their day-to-day living.
