Details on the manufacturers involved in toxic contamination investigation

A congressional investigation has found serious levels of toxic metals that can harm brain development in many popular baby foods, including organic brands.

According to CNN: "Today's report reveals that companies not only under-report the high levels of toxic content in their baby food, but also knowingly keep toxic products on the market," said Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, chair of the House Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, which conducted the investigation.

A U.S. House Subcommittee said it requested internal data from seven companies in 2019 after the Healthy Babies Bright Futures nonprofit published results of testing it did on baby foods.

A few of the companies subject to the recall include:

  • Walmart
  • Sprout Foods
  • Campbell Soup Co., which makes Plum Organics baby food
  • Gerber
  • Beech-Nut
  • Earth’s Best Organics maker Hain Celestial
  • Happy Family Organics maker Nurture Inc.

The report found some instances where manufacturers never tested the final products, even though levels of toxic metals might be higher in the finished products.

It also found instances where manufacturers broke internal standards by selling foods that exceeded them.

More details about the toxic baby food investigation

Because babies’ brains are still developing, there is a lot of concern about how those metals could damage that development.

"Even in trace amounts, these contaminants can alter the developing brain and erode a child's IQ," said Jane Houlihan, research director for Healthy Babies Bright Futures.

A few of the toxic heavy metals found in these baby food brands in levels that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers harmful to human health include:

  • Arsenic–73%
  • Lead–95%
  • Cadmium–75%
  • Mercury–32%
  • One-fourth of the baby foods tested had all four heavy metals

“We acknowledge that there is more work to be done, but the FDA reiterates its strong commitment to continue to reduce consumer exposure to toxic elements and other contaminants,” the agency admitted after request for a statement.

Opponents for the way these companies skirt transparency believe that the FDA should require baby food companies to test the final products and make the results available, particularly for organic brands.

The Shield Legal Network team believes that the families of infants with serious medical conditions as a result of the unreported heavy metals in toxic baby foods should have an opportunity at justice.

The FDA finalized guidance for infant rice cereal, recommending it contain no more than 100 parts per billion of arsenic.
