According to a new U.S. Congressional report, some of America's biggest manufacturers of baby food have not been adequately testing and removing products with dangerous levels of heavy metals.

HBBF tested 168 popular baby foods in America, from brands like Gerber, Earth's Best, Beech-Nut, and more–here's a breakdown of the results:

  • Heavy metal contamination was highest in products containing rice, juice, and sweet potato.
  • 88 percent of foods tested "lack any federal standards or guidance on maximum safe levels of toxic heavy metals like arsenic and lead.”
  • 60 percent of the products labeled "BPA Free" tested positive for BPA.
  • Baby food labeled "certified organic" had higher levels of arsenic than conventional.

The heavy metals tested in these studies–specifically cadmium, lead, mercury, and inorganic arsenic–are harmful in any amount.

Details on the manufacturers of baby food involved in toxic contamination

After the Healthy Babies Bright Futures nonprofit published results of testing it did on baby foods, a U.S. House Subcommittee requested internal data from seven companies.

A few of the companies subject to the recall include:

  • Earth’s Best Organics maker Hain Celestial
  • Happy Family Organics maker Nurture Inc.
  • Walmart
  • Gerber
  • Beech-Nut
  • Sprout Foods
  • Campbell Soup Co., which makes Plum Organics baby food

The report found some instances where manufacturers never tested the final products, even though levels of toxic metals might be higher in the finished products–as well as instances where manufacturers broke internal standards by selling foods that exceeded them.

The Shield Legal Network team believes that the families of infants with serious medical conditions as a result of the unreported heavy metals in toxic baby foods should have an opportunity at justice.

The FDA finalized guidance for infant rice cereal, recommending it contain no more than 100 parts per billion of arsenic.
